LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Wednesday refused to play in the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in India.
The federation formally asked the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to shift Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue. It cited strained bilateral ties and security concerns.
PHF President Mohiuddin Ahmed Wani said the decision aimed to provide a safe and dignified environment for the national team.
He stressed that Pakistan remained committed to promoting the Asian Champions Trophy and international hockey.
“We are ready to play against all FIH member countries, including India,” Wani said.
He also said the PHF supported the principle of keeping sports free from politics.
Wani expressed hope that the AHF would consider Pakistan’s request for a neutral venue. He said this would help ensure Pakistan’s full and uninterrupted participation in the tournament.
Asian Champions Trophy Schedule
The Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2026 is scheduled from October 27 to November 5 in Jalandhar and Mohali.
Pakistan, India, China, Japan, Malaysia and Korea are among the participating teams.
Jalandhar will host the opening ceremony and league-stage matches. The later stages will take place in Mohali.
Pakistan and India are scheduled to face each other in Jalandhar on November 1.
PHF Seeks Government Clearance
The development came days after Indian Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claimed that Pakistan would participate in the tournament.
However, Wani had clarified on September 14 that Pakistan’s participation would depend on government approval.
“The visit of the Pakistan team will depend on government clearance. We will do whatever the government asks us to do,” Wani had said.
The PHF has now formally sought a neutral venue from the AHF amid continued concerns over the Pakistan team’s participation in India.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have also affected sporting events. Indian and Pakistani players have, on several occasions, been barred from shaking hands with each other.
