WASHINGTON: Meta is reportedly developing a new pair of smart glasses without a camera. The company could begin shipping the device as early as October, according to The Information.
The glasses, reportedly known as Luna, may be unveiled during Meta’s annual Connect developer conference on September 23 and 24.
The new model is expected to be available in two styles, called Clubmaster and Burbank.
Luna Smart Glasses to Feature Meta AI
Unlike Meta’s existing smart glasses, Luna will reportedly have no camera.
The glasses are expected to feature six built-in microphones and speakers directed toward the user’s ears. These components would allow users to interact with Meta AI through voice commands.
A button on the side of the glasses is also expected to provide quick access to the AI assistant.
The device may feature slimmer temples as well. This could give the glasses a more traditional eyewear design.
Camera-Free Design Addresses Privacy Concerns
Meta’s existing smart glasses have sold well but have also faced privacy concerns because of their built-in cameras.
Critics have raised concerns that the cameras could be used to record people without their knowledge.
Meta has an LED indicator that flashes when the glasses are recording video. However, users previously found ways to disable or obstruct the indicator.
The company later released updates to address those issues. In August, Meta also closed a loophole that allowed users to start recording and then cover the LED while filming.
Meta May Target Privacy-Conscious Users
Privacy concerns have continued to affect perceptions of camera-equipped smart glasses.
Luna’s camera-free design could therefore appeal to consumers who have avoided Meta’s existing models because of those concerns.
If the reported timeline remains unchanged, Meta could unveil Luna at Connect later this month and begin shipping the glasses in October.
