ISLAMABAD: Pakistani film Wakhri, inspired by the life of slain social media influencer Qandeel Baloch, has joined the South Asian Film Season 2026.
The film is part of this year’s lineup of nine movies from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The season aims to bring South Asian films and filmmakers to audiences around the world.
Released across Pakistan in 2024, Wakhri follows Noor Malik, a widowed schoolteacher who becomes an overnight social media sensation.
Iram Parveen Bilal directed the film, while Faryal Gohar plays the lead role.
The story draws inspiration from Qandeel Baloch, a Pakistani social media influencer who was murdered in an honour-related killing.
Wakhri Earns International Recognition
Producer Abid Aziz Merchant described the film’s selection as a form of validation for the team.
Speaking to Geo Digital, Merchant said Wakhri had built a strong journey through international film festivals.
He said the film’s selection alongside movies such as All We Imagine as Light shows that Pakistani stories can connect with audiences worldwide.
Merchant also said the film’s international journey offers hope to Pakistani filmmakers.
He noted that the country’s film industry continues to face several challenges.
Film Screened at Major Festivals
Wakhri has appeared at major international film platforms, including Locarno, Cannes and Busan.
The film had its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah in December 2023.
It later appeared at several international film festivals in 2024.
These screenings helped bring the Pakistani film to audiences outside the country.
