PCB moves to appoint Mike Smith as Test batting coach
Pakistan is set to appoint former South African first-class cricketer Michael Smith as the national Test team’s batting coach ahead of the upcoming three-match series against England.
Michael Smith will likely take charge once the PCB completes the appointment process.
The Level 4-qualified coach previously worked with Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The role gave him valuable experience within Pakistan’s domestic cricket setup.
Former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq has served as the team’s interim batting coach since April 2026. He joined the coaching staff under Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed.
PCB search for a permanent coach
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) launched its search for a permanent batting coach in May. It publicly invited applications for the position. The application deadline expired on June 7, and the board then began evaluating candidates.
England Test series schedule
Pakistan will face England in a three-match Test series later this month. Headingley in Leeds will host the opening Test from August 19 to 23. Lord’s will stage the second Test from August 27 to 31.
Edgbaston in Birmingham will host the third and final Test from September 9 to 13.
Michael Smith’s expected appointment forms part of the PCB’s efforts to strengthen the national team’s batting department ahead of the challenging away series.
