England fast bowler Brydon Carse could be in doubt for the second Test against Pakistan after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation into a reported nightclub incident in Derby.
A video circulating on social media appears to show Carse in handcuffs outside a nightclub on Saturday night. Police officers surround the England fast bowler in the footage.
ECB Launches Investigation
The ECB confirmed that it is investigating the reported incident.
“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible,” the board said.
Reports suggest that police briefly detained Carse. However, authorities did not arrest him, and he was released without charge.
Durham declined to comment on the matter. Authorities also contacted Derbyshire Constabulary for further details.
Carse Was Due to Rejoin England Squad
The 31-year-old is part of England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.
England released Carse to play for Durham after he missed out on the playing XI for the first Test at Headingley. He scored 26 runs and returned match figures of 2/82 during Durham’s 338-run victory over Derbyshire.
The reported incident took place while Carse was celebrating the win with his teammates.
He was scheduled to rejoin the England squad in London on Monday. The team will then have two training days at Lord’s before the second Test begins on Thursday.
However, his participation could now depend on the outcome of the ECB investigation.
England’s Off-Field Conduct Faces Fresh Scrutiny
The incident has renewed attention on England players’ off-field conduct and their relationship with alcohol.
Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were involved in a late-night incident during the previous Test summer. Investigators cleared both players of violent conduct. However, they received written warnings for breaching contractual obligations.
England managing director Rob Key later introduced updated guidance on alcohol consumption. The board subsequently relaxed those restrictions.
Test captain Joe Root also removed England’s midnight curfew. He said he trusted the players to behave like “grown adults” away from the field.
Carse has not yet played for England this summer. Wrist and elbow injuries ruled him out of the New Zealand series.
He later returned to action and earned selection in the ODI squad against India. His performances and fitness during The Hundred then helped him secure a place in England’s Test squad.
The ECB investigation could now determine whether Carse remains available for the crucial second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.
