Germany Skilled Worker Visa 2026: Requirements, Fees and Application Process

ISLAMABAD: Earning abroad is a dream for many, which makes people wealthy in a short period of time, while European countries are among people’s wish list.

Germany is an important country in Europe having scores of employment opportunities.

According to Section 5 of the Residence Act, the general entitlement requirements include a passport, proof of financial means, and no existing reason for expulsion.

Further details on the application procedure for residence permits and information on important points of contact can be found on Germany’s website

This overview reflects the process as of January 2025 and is published by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Checking the Requirements

Applicants must ensure the equivalence or comparability of their foreign higher education qualification or vocational qualification, and they must obtain a licence to practise if it is necessary.

A concrete job offer in Germany or a valid employment contract is required for the process.

Individuals over the age of 45 must pay attention to the minimum salary requirement, which demands an annual gross salary of at least €55,770 as of 2026, or they must provide proof of adequate provision for retirement.

As a general rule, approval from the Federal Employment Agency will be obtained during the visa procedure itself.

Making an Appointment at the German Embassy

Applicants need to prepare the required documents, which include an employment contract, a passport, proof of the recognised degree or vocational qualification, and the visa application form.

German embassies and consulates provide information on their websites regarding possible waiting times for appointments and any additional documents that might be necessary.

Applicants should also inform themselves about whether they have the option to accelerate the entry process via the fast-track procedure for skilled workers with the assistance of their employer.

Applying for a Visa in the Country of Residence

It is necessary to bring all the required documents in their entirety.

The visa application fee is €75, which is payable in the local currency.

Processing times can vary strongly depending on the specific mission abroad and the current processing workload, so further information should be sought on the website of the competent embassy.

Entering Germany

The fourth step covers the actual entry into Germany. This stage involves the issuance of the entry visa for qualified employment and booking a flight or planning the journey to Germany.

In order for an entry visa to be issued, proof of valid health insurance coverage must be presented. After entering Germany, a new health insurance policy must be taken out.

Applying for a Residence Permit in Germany

New residents must register their home address in Germany at the Residents’ Registration Office.

It is also necessary to book an appointment at the competent foreigners authority.

Applicants should ask the foreigners authority for a list of the required documents and start the preparation.

The application for the residence permit to perform skilled work is done under Sections 18a and 18b of the Residence Act.

Fees for this stage may add up to €100 under Sections 45 ff. of the Residence Ordinance.

It is critical that the application for the residence permit must be submitted before the entry visa expires.
