Maryam Nawaz Approves New Safety SOPs for Sewerage Workers in Punjab

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of accidents during sewerage cleaning and approved comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to protect sanitary workers, ARY News reported.

Under the new guidelines, authorities must enforce protective measures during sewerage cleaning operations. Workers will also need proper safety equipment before starting work.

A committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo developed the SOPs to prevent accidents and improve workplace safety.

Toxic Gas Checks Made Mandatory

The new rules strictly prohibit opening manholes or approaching them without first checking for toxic gases.

Workers cannot enter a manhole until officials inspect the levels of poisonous gases. The guidelines also require sanitary workers to wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment.

In addition, authorities must install safety barricades and warning boards around work areas. They must also place traffic signs to alert motorists and protect workers.

Only Trained Staff Can Operate Cleaning Machines

Additional Chief Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo said only trained personnel would be allowed to operate jetting and suction machines.

The SOPs also introduce a compulsory permit-to-work system for manhole entry. Workers must obtain prior permission before entering any manhole.

The measures aim to reduce workplace hazards and prevent avoidable deaths and injuries during sewerage cleaning operations across Punjab.
