Pakistan Raises Kashmir Dispute and Indus Waters Treaty at EU Meeting

BRUSSELS: Pakistan has urged the international community to uphold international law and honour international agreements. The country highlighted the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and the Indus Waters Treaty during a European Parliament meeting on global governance.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union, Rahim Hayat Qureshi, addressed the meeting. He stressed that respecting international treaties remains essential for global stability and the credibility of international law.

Qureshi raised Pakistan’s concerns over alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty. He also called for resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

The ambassador emphasised equal rights among states. He further urged policymakers to consider all relevant parties’ views when reforming the United Nations and advancing global interests.

Pakistan Calls for Cooperation on Global Challenges

Qureshi also urged countries to work together on reforming the global financial system, tackling climate change and developing modern technologies.

During the discussion, Czech Member of the European Parliament Andrej Dostál supported Pakistan’s position on the Indus Waters Treaty.

German MEP Michael von der Schulenburg also called on the international community to help ensure compliance with the treaty.

India-Pakistan Tensions Over Water Sharing

The discussion comes amid continuing tensions over the Indus Waters Treaty. In April 2025, India announced it would hold the agreement in abeyance following an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan rejected the announcement and maintained that neither country can unilaterally suspend the treaty.

The World Bank brokered the 1960 agreement, which governs the sharing of the Indus River system between Pakistan and India.

The treaty remains a major source of tension between the two neighbours. Islamabad has warned that any attempt to restrict Pakistan’s water flows would have serious consequences.
