WhatsApp Introduces Four New Group Chat Features for Android and iPhone

WhatsApp has announced four new features for group chats, including Group Status updates, permanent message pins, improved chat history sharing, and a new filter for important messages.

The changes are designed to help users manage busy group conversations and find relevant messages more easily.

The new features are rolling out to WhatsApp users on Android and iOS.

Group Status Lets You Share Updates With Specific Groups

WhatsApp has introduced Group Status, which allows users to share status updates with members of a particular group.

Unlike regular WhatsApp Status updates, which are shared with selected contacts, Group Status updates are visible only to members of the chosen group.

Group members can view the updates, react to them, and share their own statuses.

Like regular WhatsApp statuses, these updates automatically disappear after 24 hours.

The feature could be useful for sharing photos, announcements, or everyday updates with specific groups without making them visible to other contacts.

WhatsApp Now Lets You Pin Messages Forever

WhatsApp is also removing the time limit for pinned messages in group chats.

Previously, users could pin messages for 24 hours, seven days, or 30 days.

With the new update, users can keep important messages pinned permanently.

This means group members no longer need to pin the same message again after its time limit expires.

The feature can help groups keep important information, such as meeting details, addresses, and announcements, easily accessible.

Share Old Messages With Members After They Join

WhatsApp is expanding its Group Message History feature, which allows new members to catch up on earlier conversations.

Previously, group members could share recent chat history when adding someone to a group.

Now, they can also share older messages after that person has already joined.

To use the feature, users can tap the new member’s name within the group chat and choose to share recent messages.

This can help new members understand previous discussions without asking others to repeat information or forward individual messages.

WhatsApp says the shared messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption.

New Filter Shows Mentions and Direct Replies

The fourth feature is a new chat filter called “Mentions and replies.”

It displays unread group conversations where someone has mentioned the user or replied directly to one of their messages.

The filter also includes messages containing the @all mention, which is used to notify everyone in a group.

This means users can quickly find conversations that need their attention without scrolling through every unread group message.

The feature could be particularly useful for people who belong to several active WhatsApp groups.

When Will These Features Be Available?

WhatsApp announced the four updates on October 29, 2026.

The company is introducing them gradually, so some users may receive the features before others.

The updates are being released for both Android and iPhone users.

Users should install the latest available version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to receive the new features as they become available.
