LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his reported feud with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and confirmed that he remains available for the national team.
The 41-year-old forward addressed the dispute in an open letter shared on social media. He also explained why he left the Portugal camp after the team’s match against Norway.
“If I am physically fit, playing for my club, scoring goals, I hope that after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo wrote.
Ronaldo Explains Dispute With Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo said the dispute started when Jesus asked him if he was ready to play 30 minutes against Norway.
“To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me whether I was ready to play 30 minutes (against Norway),” Ronaldo said.
The Portugal captain explained that he and Jesus had earlier agreed that he would not play in the match.
However, Ronaldo said Jesus later “broke his word” by not bringing him onto the pitch.
He also accused the coach of breaking his word for a second time. Ronaldo said Jesus showed “aggressiveness” when he discussed the matter with the media after the game.
Ronaldo Left Portugal Camp
Ronaldo, 41, left the Portugal camp after he remained on the bench during the team’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Norway on September 27.
His sudden departure sparked speculation about a possible dispute with Jesus.
Ronaldo’s latest statement has now explained his position on the matter. He said he remains committed to representing Portugal whenever he is fit and available.
