Twenty-one former international cricket captains have renewed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure that incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan receives the medical treatment ordered by the Supreme Court.
The former cricketers raised concerns about Khan’s medical assessment and subsequent return to Adiala Jail.
Supreme Court Had Ordered Medical Examination
According to the former captains, the Supreme Court ordered on August 18 that Khan be transferred from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for examination and treatment.
However, authorities instead took him to PIMS. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital also attended the medical assessment.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a medical team examined Khan. The team reportedly included an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician.
Tarar said the doctors declared Khan medically fit.
Former Captains Seek Independent Assessment
The former captains said Khan remained at the hospital for only a few hours before authorities returned him to jail.
Therefore, they urged the government to allow a court-directed medical board to complete a full assessment.
They also said the board should include Khan’s personal doctors and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan.
The signatories expressed particular concern about reports of vision loss in Khan’s right eye. They called for an independent medical examination of his condition.
In addition, they asked authorities to immediately implement any treatment recommended by the medical board.
Call for Regular Family Visits
The former cricket captains also requested uninterrupted weekly family visits for Khan.
They urged the government to ensure that medical decisions follow the recommendations of qualified doctors and the court’s directions.
The latest appeal follows a similar letter from 14 former international captains in February. That group had also expressed concerns about Khan’s health and medical treatment.
Former Cricket Legends Among the Signatories
The signatories include several prominent names from international cricket.
They include Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, Arjuna Ranatunga, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
The renewed appeal highlights continuing concerns among former cricket figures over Khan’s health, medical assessment and access to recommended treatment.
