Russia’s Islam Makhachev used his dominant grappling to earn a unanimous decision win over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia early Sunday.
The victory allowed Makhachev to retain his UFC welterweight title after a tight, tense five-round battle.
The 28-year-old Irish challenger gave the champion plenty of problems. However, Makhachev’s limpet-like wrestling helped him secure the win. He also set a new UFC record with 17 consecutive victories in the promotion.
Makhachev Controls the Early Rounds
Makhachev faced a considerable disadvantage in height and reach. Still, he brought the fight to the mat early in the first round.
The Russian landed a lightning-quick single-leg takedown. Garry remained calm and worked his way back to his feet without suffering damage.
In the second round, Makhachev connected with a high kick to Garry’s head. The blow left Garry stunned.
The fight went to the ground again. This time, Garry ended up on his back in the middle of the cage. However, he again managed to get back to his feet and survive the round.
Garry Fights Back
The tide briefly turned in Garry’s favour midway through the third round. He began to find his range and landed heavy kicks to Makhachev’s body and lead leg.
Garry also avoided takedowns for most of the round. However, Makhachev returned to his smothering grappling in the fourth round.
The Russian regained control of the bout and entered the final round with the advantage.
Garry likely needed a finish to take the belt from his opponent. He gave his all in the final frame.
However, Makhachev stayed out of trouble and held on for the victory. All three judges awarded him the win on the scorecards.
“Ian is a great fighter, a good man, and I just respect him. He gave me a hard time, but I still prove [myself] every fight. Thank you for this match,” Makhachev said.
Mackenzie Dern Retains Her Title
In the co-main event, American-Brazilian Mackenzie Dern retained her women’s strawweight title.
Dern earned a decision victory over Canada’s Gillian Robertson.
