Mainz made a strong start to their Bundesliga campaign with a commanding 5-0 win over Hamburg, while Augsburg moved to the top of the table after a 4-1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
Mainz Dominate Hamburg
Mainz suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Hamburg last season. This time, however, they controlled the match from the opening whistle.
Sheraldo Becker opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Kaishu Sano sent him through on goal, and Becker calmly found the bottom corner.
Becker then turned provider for Mainz’s second goal. His low cross reached Phillipp Mwene at the back post, and the defender made it 2-0 before halftime.
Becker Leads Mainz to Big Win
Mainz continued to dominate after the break.
Becker played a key role again when he set up Phillip Tietz. The striker bundled the ball home to give Mainz a three-goal advantage.
Tietz then scored his second of the afternoon. He beat goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes to make it 4-0.
Former Hamburg player Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer completed the rout with Mainz’s fifth goal.
The result leaves Hamburg bottom of the Bundesliga after two defeats. They have also failed to score in either match.
Mainz, meanwhile, sit fifth with four points from their opening two games.
“It was a very good performance,” Mainz coach Urs Fischer said. “We were in control over the 90 minutes. We really didn’t allow much.”
He added that the team was happy to take all three points.
Augsburg Fight Back at Frankfurt
Augsburg also maintained their perfect start to the season with a 4-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Frankfurt took an early lead through Jonathan Burkardt. He headed home Younes Ebnoutalib’s lofted pass inside the opening six minutes.
The hosts controlled the first half and created several chances. However, they could not extend their advantage before the break.
Augsburg returned from halftime with a completely different approach.
Augsburg Turn the Game Around
Arijon Ibrahimovic equalised inside the first minute of the second half. The debutant headed the ball into the net at the back post.
Augsburg then completed the turnaround within another minute.
The ball fell to Robin Fellhauer inside the box, and he finished to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.
Frankfurt struggled to respond as Augsburg continued to control the game.
Alexis Claude-Maurice then made it 3-1 with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.
Fabian Rieder completed the scoring late in the match with a free-kick.
The 4-1 victory gives Augsburg a perfect six points from two games, sending them to the top of the Bundesliga table.
