OpenAI Computer History Raises Privacy Concerns Over Unencrypted Memory

OpenAI has launched Computer History, an optional ChatGPT feature for Mac users. The feature can build a searchable memory from activity across selected apps and websites.

However, the feature also raises privacy concerns. Computer History stores its generated memory files locally as unencrypted text.

How Computer History Works

Computer History can record different interaction events. These include clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts and switches between apps.

ChatGPT and Codex can then use this information to help users find previous work. The feature can also help users remember earlier activity on their Mac.

Users can choose which apps and websites provide information to Computer History. They can also pause data collection and review or delete their history.

The feature requires users to opt in. OpenAI does not enable it automatically.

Memories Remain Unencrypted

The storage method creates one of the biggest privacy concerns.

OpenAI says Computer History creates Markdown files. These files work like ordinary text documents.

The feature stores them on the user’s Mac until the user deletes or clears them. Computer History does not encrypt these files.

As a result, other software running under the same macOS user account could potentially access them if it already has the required permissions.

OpenAI treats the raw activity data differently. Temporary event files can remain on the Mac for up to 48 hours.

OpenAI processes those files on its servers to create memories. The company says it does not retain the temporary files afterwards, except when the law requires it.

Computer History Does Not Record Everything

Computer History has several privacy limits.

OpenAI says the feature does not capture screenshots or screen recordings. It also does not record microphone input or system audio.

Users can control which apps and websites contribute information. They can also pause collection whenever they want.

These controls give users more choice over the activity that ChatGPT can access.

What Happens to the Data?

OpenAI says it does not use Computer History memory files to train its models.

However, information from those memories could later appear in a ChatGPT conversation. Depending on the user’s data-control settings, OpenAI may use that conversation to improve its models.

This distinction means users should also consider their ChatGPT data settings when using Computer History.

OpenAI Warns About Prompt Injection

OpenAI also warns about another potential risk.

Giving an AI access to activity across multiple apps can increase exposure to prompt injection. Malicious instructions hidden inside content could potentially influence an AI system.

Business and Enterprise users have an additional requirement. Administrators must first enable Computer History, while individual users must still opt in.

The feature is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

A Useful Feature With Privacy Risks

Computer History could make ChatGPT more useful for finding past work and remembering computer activity.

At the same time, the feature gives ChatGPT access to a broader picture of what users do on their computers.

For people who handle sensitive personal, financial or work information, app and website exclusion controls will therefore remain particularly important.
