Near-Total Lunar Eclipse to Occur on August 27-28, 2026

A dramatic celestial event will take place during the night of August 27-28, 2026.

A partial lunar eclipse will occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon.

Although it will technically be a partial eclipse, most of the Moon will enter the Earth’s darkest shadow.

Up to 96% of the Moon’s Surface Will Be Covered

The eclipse will cover around 93% of the Moon’s diameter.

Based on surface area, about 96% of the lunar disk will enter the Earth’s umbral shadow.

As a result, the Moon may appear almost completely covered.

Only a small sliver of the lunar surface will remain illuminated. This bright section will appear near the northern part of the Moon.

Partial Eclipse Begins on August 28

The penumbral eclipse will begin at 01:23 UTC on August 28.

The partial umbral eclipse will start at 02:33 UTC.

The event will reach its maximum at 04:12 UTC.

At that point, the Moon will be almost completely inside the Earth’s darkest shadow.

Eclipse Ends Later in the Morning

The partial umbral phase will end at 05:52 UTC.

After that, the Moon will gradually move out of the Earth’s shadow.

The penumbral eclipse will end at 07:02 UTC on August 28.

The complete event will therefore last for several hours.

Lunar Eclipses Are Safe to Watch

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse does not require special eye protection.

People can safely view the Moon without eclipse glasses or other filters.

The Moon does not produce harmful light during the event.

Therefore, skywatchers can enjoy the eclipse directly with the naked eye.
