Spotify said on Tuesday that it would begin adding “AI Persona” badges to some profiles from mid-September. The badges will give listeners more transparency about whether an artist behind the music represents a real person.
Spotify Introduces AI Persona Badges
Listeners have raised concerns about artist profiles that appear human but instead represent AI-generated personas, Spotify said.
The streaming platform will display the badge on banners and About sections in artist profiles. It will also show the badge in Search and on track rows across playlists.
Starting Tuesday, artists can disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists. Spotify will also review profiles whose public identity appears to use photorealistic AI-generated imagery.
Artists Can Disclose AI Personas
Spotify’s review team will notify artists whose profiles it flags. The artists can then self-disclose their AI Persona status or appeal the decision, the company said.
Spotify will exclude AI Personas from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. However, the platform will continue recommending them to users who follow those artists.
Listeners will also be able to see whether an artist openly shared that they were an AI Persona. They can also see whether Spotify identified the profile through its own review.
Badges Focus on Artist Identity
Spotify added that the badge will reflect an artist’s public identity. It will not indicate how the artist created the music.
The new system aims to give listeners clearer information about AI-generated artist identities. It also gives artists a way to disclose their use of AI while allowing Spotify to review profiles that may appear deceptively human.
