LONDON: Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council and Coordinator of the National Paigham-e-Aman Committee, Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, has received the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation in London.
Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally presented the award during a ceremony at Lambeth Palace.
The award recognizes Ashrafi’s contributions to peace, reconciliation, interfaith and intra-faith harmony, minority rights, and peaceful coexistence.
Ashrafi Recognized for Peace Efforts
Ashrafi was also recognized for his longstanding opposition to extremism, terrorism, religious hatred, and sectarian violence.
The Hubert Walter Award is part of the Lambeth Awards. These awards recognize individuals for distinguished contributions across different fields.
According to details released by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Ashrafi was among the figures honored across five award categories this year.
Focus on Interfaith Harmony
The award recognizes Ashrafi’s decades of work in peacebuilding, religious diplomacy, and dialogue between different religious and sectarian communities.
His work has also focused on promoting mutual respect and protecting the rights of minorities and vulnerable communities.
Ashrafi has previously received the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Global Peace Award for his contributions to peace, harmony, and cooperation.
The OIC award and the Hubert Walter Award are separate international honors. Both recognize his work in different communities, including the Muslim world and the wider international community.
International Roles
Ashrafi is also a Member of the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League.
In addition, he serves as Secretary-General of the International Tazeem-e-Haramain Sharifain Council and as a Member of the International Muslim Forum.
He is also associated with several international Islamic and interfaith organizations.
