NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has described how he maintains a working relationship with US President Donald Trump despite their political differences.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, Mamdani said their shared affection for New York City had helped build a connection between the two politicians.
“The president and I have many disagreements, but one thing we do agree on is this city and how much we love this city,” Mamdani said.
The mayor explained that since their first meeting in November last year, he has tried to keep discussions focused on the needs of New Yorkers rather than political disagreements.
Housing Project Brings Common Ground
One issue that has featured in their conversations is Mamdani’s plan to redevelop Sunnyside Yard in Queens.
The proposed project could create around 12,000 homes over the railway yard.
Mamdani said he and Trump sometimes exchange text messages about the development and other ways to deliver results for New York City.
When host Jimmy Kimmel asked whether Trump also used capital letters in his private messages, as he often does on social media, Mamdani said the texts were “pretty standard.”
Kimmel then offered to take a selfie with the mayor and send it to Trump to test their unusual rapport.
Mamdani declined, joking: “Jimmy, I love you, but I love housing more.”
Trump Previously Criticised Mamdani
The cordial tone has drawn attention because Trump sharply criticised Mamdani before his election.
However, the president’s remarks have changed since the two began meeting.
During a visit to Gracie Mansion last week, Trump praised Mamdani’s start as mayor and said he hoped the 36-year-old Democrat-socialist would become a “great” mayor in New York City’s history.
Mamdani’s comments on the late-night programme offered a glimpse into how the two leaders have maintained communication despite their differences.
