Former Australia batter Usman Khawaja has raised concerns over the lack of stability in Pakistan cricket, saying the frequent changes in coaches, selectors and players could make him hesitant to take up the national team’s head coach role.

Speaking during an interview with the Backward Point Pod, Khawaja was asked whether he would consider coaching Pakistan in the future.

Khawaja said he would only seriously consider the role if greater stability was established within Pakistan cricket, particularly at the top level.

“I find the Pakistani cricket team, I say this always, seems like it’s forever changing. The coaches are forever changing, and the selectors are forever changing. There’s no stability in Pakistan cricket. The stability needs to be found from the top,” he said.

The former Australia batter also pointed to frequent changes in the national squad. He noted that some of Pakistan’s best players continue to move in and out of the team.

“It feels like Pakistan’s best players are coming in and out. If there was a bit more stability in the future, you could contemplate it. I feel like if I do it in the Pakistani cricket team, I’ll be there one minute, but then be out the next minute,” Khawaja added.

PCB Makes Major Changes

Khawaja’s comments come at a time when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made sweeping changes to the Test setup following defeats against England in the first two Tests at Headingley and Lord’s.

Ahead of the third and final Test, the PCB released seven players from the squad. The players included Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Ali Usman, Khurram Shahzad, Aamer Jamal, Salman Ali Agha and Awais Zafar.

They were replaced by Saim Ayub, Abdullah Fazal, wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig, Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Imran Jr and Razaullah.

Changes were also made to the coaching staff. Red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were released from their roles.

White-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke will oversee the team for the third Test.

England Series

The final Test of the three-match series will be played in Birmingham from September 9 to 13.

England have already secured the series after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Khawaja’s remarks highlight the wider concerns surrounding Pakistan cricket’s management structure. For him, greater stability at the top and consistency in selection and coaching would be important before considering a future role with the national team.
