The dramatic rescue of eight people trapped in a chairlift nearly 900 feet above the ground in Battagram is set to reach Pakistani cinemas through a new documentary titled Hanging By A Wire.
The documentary revisits the tense 2023 Battagram chairlift rescue and highlights the courage of local residents who played a crucial role in saving all eight passengers.
Documentary Highlights Local Heroes
Producer, director and writer M Ali Naqvi said the film aims to take the story of the region’s local heroes to audiences around the world.
The documentary also highlights the underdevelopment and poor infrastructure in the area. Chairlifts remain an important means of transportation for many communities, particularly children travelling to school.
Much of the film uses original footage recorded during the actual rescue operation. A local jewellery shop owner captured some of the footage using a drone, while residents also recorded the events as they unfolded.
Hanging By A Wire has already been screened in cinemas in the UK and the US. The documentary has also received attention at the Sundance Film Festival. It is now scheduled to be released in Pakistani cinemas later this year.
The 2023 Battagram Rescue
On August 23, 2023, two cables of a chairlift in Battagram’s Allai Valley snapped. Eight people were left stranded as the chairlift remained suspended from a single cable.
Pakistan Army personnel managed to rescue one passenger using a helicopter. Zipline experts Ali Swati and Sahib Khan were then brought in to help rescue the remaining passengers.
The operation continued for nearly 12 hours as rescuers worked under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions. Eventually, all eight passengers were safely brought back to the ground.
Beyond the Rescue
The documentary goes beyond the dramatic rescue itself. It examines the difficult conditions faced by residents of the region and the lack of safe transport infrastructure.
For many communities, chairlifts continue to serve as a daily means of transportation. Schoolchildren are among those who depend on these systems to travel to and from school.
Through the rescue footage and stories of those involved, Hanging By A Wire aims to preserve the memory of one of Pakistan’s most dramatic rescue operations while drawing attention to the challenges that remain in the region.
