The Russo brothers have shared a personal video message after Avengers: Endgame reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo thanked fans after the Marvel blockbuster overtook James Cameron’s Avatar at the global box office following its Encore theatrical re-release.
The filmmakers reflected on the experience of watching the movie with audiences when it was first released in 2019.
“Our favourite thing about making Avengers: Endgame was sitting in the theaters with audiences as we released it,” the brothers said. “So the fact that we could do that again on the Encore re-release was amazing.”
They also thanked fans for returning to cinemas to experience the film again.
“We just want to thank everyone for all of your support throughout the entire career of this lifetime career of this movie,” the directors said.
“We’re grateful to everybody who went back out to the theater to see it again, to cheer for it again, to feel something in a room full of people,” they added.
Endgame Returns to the Top
The Encore re-release introduced Avengers: Endgame to a new generation of moviegoers.
The Russo brothers noted that longtime fans returned to cinemas alongside viewers who had never experienced the film on the big screen.
The directors ended their message by expressing their appreciation to fans.
“We love you very much and we’re super grateful,” they said.
Originally released in April 2019, Avengers: Endgame became a global phenomenon and brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga to its emotional climax.
Its initial theatrical run pushed the film past Avatar at the worldwide box office. However, Avatar later reclaimed the top position following its own theatrical re-release.
The latest Endgame re-release has now added enough to the film’s worldwide total for it to move ahead of Avatar once again.
The Marvel blockbuster has therefore reclaimed the record as the highest-grossing movie in global box-office history.
