BAKU: George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a dominant qualifying performance in Baku on Friday.
The Mercedes driver finished more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified third, while Isack Hadjar took fourth on his return to Formula 1 action.
However, the session produced very different results for Russell’s Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli Crashes in Q1
Antonelli hit the wall during Q1 and damaged the front-left section of his car.
The championship leader had already set a time fast enough to advance to Q2. However, the damage prevented him from continuing in qualifying.
As a result, Antonelli will start Saturday’s race well down the grid.
The crash was an unusual mistake from Antonelli, who has enjoyed a strong season so far.
He arrived in Azerbaijan with an 81-point lead over Russell after winning eight of the opening 14 races.
Antonelli had also won the previous two races before heading to Baku.
Russell’s pole now gives him an opportunity to reduce that championship deficit.
Russell Dominates Qualifying
Russell had shown strong pace throughout the weekend.
He topped both practice sessions on Thursday before producing his fastest lap when it mattered most.
The Briton later described his pole lap as “perfect”.
Leclerc admitted he had not expected the gap between himself and Russell to be so large.
Mercedes’ pace in Baku has strengthened Russell’s hopes of converting pole into a strong result on Saturday.
However, starting first does not guarantee victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Only three previous races at the Baku circuit have been won by the driver starting from pole.
The narrow street circuit has also produced several unpredictable races since joining the Formula 1 calendar.
Russell will therefore start with the strongest possible position, while Antonelli faces a difficult recovery drive from further down the grid.
