NEW DELHI: India has rejected Pakistan’s request to shift the 2026 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy from Punjab or move Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh said there would be no change to the tournament venue. His comments came a day after the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) formally approached the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) over security concerns.
“No such request would be entertained. There will be no change in venue,” Singh said.
He added that Pakistan would have to travel to India if it wanted to participate in the tournament.
Pakistan Seeks Neutral Venue
PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani confirmed on Wednesday that the federation had asked the AHF to either relocate the entire tournament or move all of Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue.
The PHF cited the current sensitive relations between Pakistan and India and security concerns. Wani said the request was aimed at ensuring a safe and conducive environment for Pakistani players and officials.
Wani also said Pakistan remained committed to the tournament and was ready to play against India and other FIH member nations.
Bangladesh, Oman Could Replace Pakistan
Singh said Bangladesh and Oman could replace Pakistan in the six-team tournament if Islamabad decides not to send its team.
The tournament is scheduled from October 27 to November 5 in Jalandhar and Mohali.
India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Japan and South Korea are currently listed among the participating teams. Jalandhar will host the league-stage matches, while the later stages are scheduled for Mohali.
Pakistan and India are scheduled to face each other in Jalandhar on November 1.
Pakistan Participation Still Uncertain
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier said that Pakistan would participate in the tournament.
However, Wani had previously clarified that Pakistan’s participation would depend on government clearance. The PHF has since formally sought a change in the tournament arrangements.
Pakistan has previously withdrawn from hockey events in India over security concerns, including the Asia Cup and the FIH Junior World Cup.
The Asian Hockey Federation has yet to announce a decision on Pakistan’s request for a neutral venue.
