MADRID: Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso has criticised the modern F1 cars, saying they have diminished the excitement of racing at some of the sport’s most iconic circuits.
The Aston Martin driver made the comments after his home Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit.
The track faced criticism for offering limited overtaking opportunities. Reigning world champion Lando Norris also described it as “not a great race track”.
However, Alonso said his frustration extended beyond the Spanish Grand Prix. He pointed to several historic circuits that he believes have lost some of their former appeal.
The Spaniard named Silverstone in Britain, Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Suzuka in Japan among the circuits affected.
“Maybe from the cockpit, behind the wheel, especially if you drive other categories or have experienced other F1 cars, there’s a bit of frustration,” Alonso said.
“Silverstone, which is an incredible track, is no longer fun,” he added.
Alonso also highlighted two famous corners that once challenged F1 drivers.
“At Spa, it was almost embarrassing going through Eau Rouge and, at Suzuka, the 130R,” he said.
“There are circuits that have been assassinated this year.”
Alonso said he hoped Formula One could restore some of the excitement drivers once experienced at these circuits.
He also suggested that further changes to the balance between engine power and battery power could affect how F1 cars perform in the future.
Alonso is currently 19th in the drivers’ championship with three points. Kimi Antonelli leads the standings with 292 points.
