With John Ternus now leading Apple as CEO, the company is set for some internal changes. As the former hardware engineering chief, Ternus wants Apple to launch products more quickly and reduce the number of layers between departments.
In his latest Bloomberg article, Mark Gurman shares Ternus’s ideas for making Apple’s workplace more efficient and productive. The CEO has talked with colleagues about moving away from the usual product launch windows.
Apple usually launches major products in the spring and fall, but Ternus thinks the company needs to move faster to stay competitive. He believes Apple should be more “experimental” overall.
These changes could impact when Apple releases its upcoming products. The company still plans to unveil several devices this year, such as a new OLED iPad mini, AirPods with cameras, HomePod mini 2, and Apple TV 4K. Most are expected next month.
“Everything is a lot more hands-on than it used to be. It’s hectic right now,” said one of Gurman’s sources familiar with the matter.
Ternus has reportedly supported a leaner organization for years to improve efficiency. He believes Apple should slow down its hiring as the company’s headcount grows each year.
Some changes are already happening. Gurman reports that Apple let go of several Engineering Program Managers (EPMs) in the past two weeks.
Some senior employees and program managers were given two weeks to find new roles within Apple. If they cannot, they will be laid off later this year.
Like many companies, Apple is reportedly exploring AI to replace some jobs and cut costs, though no final decisions have been made. Still, layoffs are expected later this year or early next year.
