Pakistan Must Seek New EU GSP+ Arrangement From January 2027

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will need to apply for a new Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) arrangement with the European Union from January 2027, as the current framework expires in December 2026.

However, existing beneficiaries, including Pakistan, will receive a two-year grace period until December 31, 2028, to allow the EU Commission and Parliament to finalise the new arrangement.

Pakistan will need to intensify diplomatic lobbying and strengthen its capacity to meet stricter compliance requirements to qualify for the next GSP+ scheme, The News reported, citing senior official sources.

Officials said any country, including current beneficiaries, could apply once the new GSP+ regulation takes effect on January 1, 2027.

During the transition period, Pakistan must address key priorities to maintain its eligibility and fulfil international commitments under the revised rules.

EU Ambassador Discusses Future Trade Relations

Meanwhile, EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis met Pakistan Textile Council (PTC) leadership in Karachi to discuss the GSP+ scheme and future trade relations between Pakistan and the European bloc.

During the meeting, Karoblis stressed the importance of effectively implementing existing international commitments to maintain GSP+ benefits.

The discussions come as Pakistan prepares for the revised trade preference framework and seeks to preserve its access to the European market.

Ishaq Dar Highlights Importance of GSP+

Last month, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar highlighted the importance of GSP+ to Pakistan’s economic relationship with the European Union.

Dar made the remarks during a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on September 21, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

According to a Foreign Office statement, Dar emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to its partnership with the EU, particularly in trade and economic cooperation. He described GSP+ as a central component of Pakistan’s trade relations with the bloc.

Dar also appreciated the EU’s constructive engagement with Pakistan during recent regional developments. He welcomed the bloc’s recognition of Pakistan’s efforts to promote de-escalation and dialogue.
