Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand during the second Test against India after hitting the boundary wedges with his bat.
Jayasuriya breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The article covers the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, fixtures and fittings.
The ICC gave the left-arm spinner an official reprimand. He also received one demerit point.
Incident Occurred After Jayasuriya’s Dismissal
The incident took place on Monday after the final ball of the second day.
Jayasuriya got dismissed off the final delivery. As he walked back towards the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat.
The ICC treated the incident as a Level 1 offence.
This marks Jayasuriya’s first demerit point in the past 24 months.
Jayasuriya Accepts ICC Sanction
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction.
Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees proposed the punishment. Therefore, officials did not need to hold a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid brought the charge. Third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella also supported the charge.
Third Player Sanctioned in Colombo Test
Jayasuriya became the third player to receive a sanction during the Colombo Test.
India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando also received sanctions earlier in the match.
