LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to allow Basant celebrations across the province in the second week of March 2027, with plans to regulate kite-making, control prices and introduce safety measures through legislation, sources said on Wednesday.
According to the sources, the government has prepared an administrative plan to permit kite-making at designated locations. Officials have also developed a strategy to control the prices of kites and strings.
The provincial government plans to introduce legislation covering Basant celebrations, including safety measures and rules for kite-flying. Authorities are expected to announce the designated locations and detailed regulations soon.
Lahore Basant Festival Planned for January
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had approved a 10-day Basant festival in Lahore from January 29 to February 7, 2027, following the festival’s return earlier this year.
According to a government spokesperson, celebrations will pause for one day on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day.
Maryam Nawaz previously said Basant would help promote Punjab’s historic cultural traditions. She also directed the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate safety measures during the festivities.
Basant Returns After More Than Two Decades
Lahore held its first Basant festival in more than two decades in February 2026 after the Punjab government lifted the ban on kite-flying.
The three-day celebrations took place under strict regulations. Streets and roads featured lights and decorations, while rooftop gatherings continued late into the night.
Authorities also introduced public facilities, including free transport, to help residents attend the festivities.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the celebrations as a victory for Lahore and Pakistan. She also expressed hope that the next edition would be even more vibrant.
