ISLAMABAD: A four-member medical team examined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on August 10, with a report showing that his anxiety level was assessed at three-plus.
According to a senior PTI source, Dr Farqad Alamgir, who was called from London for Imran Khan’s treatment, was part of the medical board.
The board also included Dr Arif Khan, Dr Akhtar Ali Bandesha and Dr Ali Arif. The federal government constituted the board to examine the former prime minister.
Dr Alamgir’s name has also emerged in recent discussions concerning Imran Khan’s medical treatment.
According to sources, Dr Alamgir changed Imran Khan’s blood pressure medication. PTI leadership and Imran’s family were also aware of the doctor’s visit to Adiala Jail.
Medical Board Recommends Daily Walk
According to the report available with Geo News, the medical board recommended that Imran Khan take a one-hour walk every day.
The board said the walk could help control his blood pressure and anxiety.
It also recommended giving him access to his family, newspapers, television and books.
The board further suggested increasing Imran Khan’s meetings with his wife.
The report has emerged amid a wider controversy over Imran Khan’s medical treatment and access to specialist care.
Earlier Check-Up Recorded Blood Pressure Fluctuations
The August 10 examination followed a check-up by consultant cardiologist Dr Akhtar Ali Bandesha on August 1.
During that examination, Imran complained of fluctuations in blood pressure, headaches and anxiety.
His blood pressure was recorded at 140/100, while his pulse was 50 beats per minute.
Dr Bandesha also recommended increasing Imran’s meetings with his wife.
He suggested providing newspapers and television to help reduce mental stress.
The August 10 report showed that Imran’s blood pressure was 140/80 and his pulse was 54 beats per minute.
He did not report chest pain, heaviness, shortness of breath or palpitations.
His echocardiogram showed normal heart valves and chambers.
Imran Had 39 Medical Check-Ups
An Adiala Jail report submitted to the Supreme Court on August 17 said Imran Khan had undergone 39 check-ups by different specialists between November 2023 and August 10, 2026.
The report also said his affected eye had almost regained normal vision after treatment for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).
CRVO is a condition that affects blood flow in the retina.
The Supreme Court later ordered authorities on August 18 to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment and treatment.
The court also sought his complete medical record.
However, the government took Imran to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), citing security concerns.
He was taken to PIMS during the night of August 20-21, where doctors conducted a detailed examination.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the medical team included an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician.
He said the doctors declared Imran medically fit before returning him to Adiala Jail.
PIMS later said two specialists from Shifa International Hospital had participated in Imran’s eye examination.
PIMS specialists conducted his other medical tests, the hospital said.
The hospital also said its medical board had finalised Imran’s medical fitness report but did not disclose its contents.
PTI Demands Access to Personal Doctors
Reacting to reports that a doctor had been called from London, PTI Information Secretary Waqas Akram raised concerns over Imran Khan’s treatment.
“The party leadership and Khan’s family were kept completely in the dark, deepening PTI’s fears over his deteriorating health and the manner in which he is being treated in detention,” he alleged.
Waqas said the involvement of a London-based specialist and changes to Imran’s treatment plan had increased concerns about his health.
He questioned why Imran’s personal physicians continued to be denied direct access to him.
The PTI leader demanded that Imran be shifted to Shifa International Hospital immediately.
He also called for unrestricted access for Imran’s family, lawyers and PTI leaders.
Waqas further demanded that Imran’s treatment be conducted under the supervision of his personal physicians, saying PTI could no longer trust assurances from the government.
